Insurance and Breast Reconstruction
For Houston breast reconstruction patients, the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA) requires both group and individual health insurance policies that cover mastectomy to cover subsequent breast reconstruction. This applies to all stages of reconstruction for the breast that received the mastectomy, as well as treatment of the other breast to achieve symmetry. It also applies to virtually any means of reconstruction, including the use of implants and autologous tissue.

Reconstruction & Prevention Treating BRCA Patients
If you have been diagnosed with a change in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene and are considering a preventive mastectomy, Dr. Linville can recreate your bust following surgery. He has worked with many patients who chose this method of breast cancer risk reduction to achieve results that provide not only peace of mind, but also confidence.
The WHCRA applies to preventive mastectomy in the same way it applies to patients undergoing mastectomy to treat cancer. If you are considering this treatment, Dr. Linville can work with you to create a custom breast reconstruction plan that helps you look and feel your best following your mastectomy.
How long does breast reconstruction surgery take?
- The length of breast reconstruction surgery depends on the technique used. Implant-based reconstruction may take one to two hours, while autologous tissue procedures can take several hours due to the microsurgical precision involved. Dr. Linville will provide a detailed timeline during your consultation.
When is the best time to have breast reconstruction?
- Breast reconstruction can be performed at the time of your mastectomy (immediate reconstruction) or months to years afterward (delayed reconstruction). Dr. Linville will coordinate with your oncologist to determine the best approach based on your treatment plan and overall health.
Will insurance cover my breast reconstruction?
- In most cases, yes. The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act requires insurance plans that cover mastectomy to also cover breast reconstruction. Our staff can help you understand your coverage and out-of-pocket costs during your consultation at our Houston office.
